Heliskiing in the Southern Lakes is special, as you get the best views, amazing snow which makes for happy faces…

Heliskiers and boarders in the New Zealand mountains have been enjoying day after day of epic snow conditions, especially the Canterbury region which has been in the direct firing line of the latest three big Southerly storms.  Although the Southern Lakes didn’t get hit with the same quantity of snow that Canterbury got, what we did get was quality and has provided us excellent heli-skiing conditions.

Each storm cycle that passed through the region gave us 30-40cm of dry powder. This has allowed us to explore every aspect of our extensive terrain and we have all enjoyed day after day of “blower pow”. It’s a season that just keeps on producing!

So, what can we expect in the near future? As temperatures start to change we may see more NW and Westerly storms heading our way. These are what we normally expect during winter and the ones that deliver large amounts of snow to Queenstown and Wanaka. Bring it on we say!

What have we got up to in the last couple of weeks…

We flew out to our glacial terrain in the Clarke Glacier.  This is exclusive terrain is beautiful with parts of the ice field emerging and the vistas are incredible. This is only available to  Southern Lakes Heliski guests to heli-ski or heliboard on and is a quick flight from Queenstown. If you can’t heliski the Tasman glacier at Mt Cook, this is another great option.

We had Racheal Oaks Ash AKA @misssnowitall who is the founder of “SnowsBest.com” enjoying a few runs with the owner of Liquid Snow Tours, Quentin Nolan. Rachael is on a quest to showcase the ultimate things to do in the Southern Lakes Region and is working with Air New Zealand to gather amazing content for their #checkinwithalocal campaign.  If you need to know anything about snow, news, winter travel or just get a bit of inside knowledge on the ski world then check her adventures out!

What do you do for the ultimate honeymoon? That’s right you go heliskiing. We have newlyweds from California McKenzie and Paul out for three days and they couldn’t have chosen a better time to come.

We pride ourselves on giving guests quality experiences where they can feel at home in our presence.  Read this great testimonial from one of our recent multi-day guests, John Hess

“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. You made me a friend and a local. Words rarely fail me, but I can’t find the right ones to let you know how much your hospitality and friendship means to me. The memories and stories you’ve given me will last forever: Roy’s Shovel, Anna’s smile, Jordan’s humour, Phil’s hair, Tarn’s hunting stories, Mal’s cheek, Thoma’s leg (ouch) Jimbo’s beard and Kazu’s dancing. It’s all been incredible. I wish you health, happiness, and love. Next time I’m bringing the family!!”

He sums up exactly what we are all about at Southern Lakes Heliski….aiming to make you feel so comfortable you feel like a local because that’s what we are, locally owned and operated, and run by locals. Thanks John for the raving review and we look forward to hosting you and your family next year.

So, to summarise, the last two weeks have made us, as a heliskiing company very happy. The snow has been pristine, the sun regularly shining, people are smiling and the wonderful thing is we have yet another two months of winter to keep on heli-skiing!!
